Turkington finishes dramatic day in WTCC with runner up spot in Independents’ class

Portadown’s Colin Turkington finished his first WTCC weekend of this season with a stunning runner-up position in the Championship’s Independents’ Class today at Portimao, Portugal.
Turkington fought his way from last position in the second race of the day after being shunted off by a competitor in the first lap to finish 11th overall, second in the Independents’ category and 13.6 seconds behind the race winner, Gabriele Tarquini.  It was an heroic performance from the current BTCC champion in blistering Portuguese heat, with in-car temperatures exceeding 50 degrees centigrade.
Earlier, in the first race of the day, the 28 year-old was forced off the track when he was shunted by Freddie Barth, finishing in 12th position overall and fourth in the Independents’ class.
Turkington, who hadn’t raced since winning the British Championship in October last year showed a fighting spirit in both races and is looking forward to his next WTCC outing at Brands Hatch on 18 July.
