Portview is due to complete an interior fit-out at an accommodation block at the Blackford Dolphin oil rig, which is currently being refurbished at Harland & Wolff. The 360ft superstructure has become part of the Belfast skyline, along with the famous shipyard cranes, Samson and Goliath, since before Christmas when it arrived from Brazil for a refit.
Portview won the £140,000 contract with Ewing Shipping for a six-week interior fit-out of the accommodation required to house workers at the site which is manned 24-hours a day in a bid to complete the 60-day upgrade on time.
Portview Contracts Director, Sean McEvoy, explained the galley area, bedrooms and laundry room all required a fit-out to ensure the workers have good quality facilities. “We had to tile the galley as well as make bespoke stainless steel units for the kitchen area. The laundry room also required bespoke pigeon-hole type units where each washed and dried item of clothing is put for the workers to ensure they have a fresh supply of clean clothing.”
The Portview team also needed to reconfigure some of the accommodation – altering a four-bedroom block to a two-bedroom space. Meanwhile, the shower areas were also clad in Whiterock PVC to ensure they are watertight and hygienic. Sean added: “We have worked very closely with the owners of the oil rig, liaising with them to ensure all the usual regulations regarding health and safety and more are followed.”
The 60-berth accommodation block provides facilities for some of the 600 skilled tradesmen required for the rig’s refurbishment – some of whom are from overseas. The shipyard’s landmark yellow cranes have had to be moved along their tracks in the building dock for the duration of the oil rig contract.
