Seventh annual event planned for Belfast’s Custom House Square from 18-20 September

More than 60 local food and drink companies to afford the public a chance to sample innovative products

Belfast’s Custom House Square will once again be filled with mouth-watering aromas and the very best in local food and drink when ‘foodie’ fans attend this year’s Tesco Taste Festival from 18-20 September.

Now in its seventh year the event is firmly established as the largest of its kind in the province with around 20,000 people expected to visit over the weekend.

As well as 60+ local exhibitors, many of whom are launching new products, the Festival boasts lots of delicious free-to-sample food and drink plus entertainment, a petting zoo and a climbing wall. Much loved local favourites Mr Tayto and Mr Morelli will be in attendance and U105fm will be hosting an afternoon show from the event on Friday afternoon. A number of well known local chefs will also be doing cookery demonstrations in conjunction with Food NI. And for the first time, the event will stay open until 8pm on Friday 18th in order to be part of Belfast’s Culture Night.

Tesco NI Marketing Manager Caoimhe Mannion said the event was the showpiece in the annual Tesco Taste NI campaign and it underlined the retailer’s credentials as a ‘force for good food’ in Northern Ireland.

“As the largest purchaser of NI food and drink we’re proud to say our commitment to local just gets bigger and better each year.

“All our Tesco fresh pork, chicken and beef, milk and eggs sold locally are sourced locally.  Through our suppliers this benefits thousands of farming families across Northern Ireland.”

Belfast tea blenders, Thompson Family Teas, make Northern Ireland’s favourite tea, Punjana, and will be exhibiting at the event. Lindsay Skinner, Punjana Ltd Sales Director, commenting about the company’s new tea products said: “We are very excited about our newly designed “foil-fresh “Green teas. These award-winning teas have great shelf appeal, and we are delighted that Tesco has featured them in all stores.”

Armagh based vegetable grower and processor Gilfresh Produce will also be there. Thomas Gilpin, Owner said: “Managing 18 growers in Northern Ireland, Gilfresh is dedicated to providing Tesco customers with top quality, local produce. We are proud to support Tesco in their Taste Festival and look forward to a busy weekend sampling our range of Gilfresh prepared vegetables.”

Ballymena sausage firm Doherty & Gray will also be exhibiting. Alan McKeown, Commercial Sales Director said: “Doherty & Gray is delighted to be part the Tesco Taste Festival once again this year, because as a Ballymena based company it provides the ideal opportunity over three days for us to interact directly with local shoppers and to showcase the range of fantastic products that we produce.

Throughout the event, shoppers will be able to sample local favourites such as the iconic Hulls ‘Veg Roll’ and our range of Hulls sausages in addition to the great new range of Tesco Finest Sausages which we started to produce exclusively for Tesco NI stores from April this year. ‘

Caoimhe Mannion concluded: “Each year we spend in excess of £550m on around 1200 lines from approximately 90 local suppliers. This event is significant for the entire agrifood sector and presents a genuine opportunity for local companies to get their brands and products in front of consumers of all ages.”

The opening hours for the Tesco Taste Festival are:
