Ballymena based Doherty & Gray has been named as Tesco Outstanding Supplier of the Month for June 2013 for its new range of meat-counter sausages and burgers under the Tesco own-label ‘Butcher’s Choice’ brand.
The award is in recognition of the enormous effort made by the company to partner with Tesco Northern Ireland as it works towards the goal of supplying 100% local meat.
In Spring this year, Tesco moved to sourcing all of its pre-packed beef, pork and chicken exclusively from local NI farmers. With the help of Doherty & Gray, all of the Tesco NI meat counter sausages and burgers are now locally sourced too. The deal, which is worth over £100,000 to the Ballymena firm, establishes Doherty & Gray as a key supplier to Tesco in Northern Ireland.
Cliff Kells, Commercial Manager, Tesco NI said, “We have introduced an Outstanding Supplier of the Month award, through which we can publicly celebrate and recognise the enormous effort our Northern Ireland suppliers put in for our customers.
“We want our suppliers to know that their hard work is important to us and we want our customers to know all about it too. Huge congratulations to Doherty & Gray. They have work very hard to meet the rigorous requirements of being a Tesco supplier. We are delighted that they have been as committed to delivering this new Butcher’s Choice range as we at Tesco are committed to supporting the local farming and food industries. Customers can look out in our stores for our ever-expanding range of Taste NI products and get to know the superb local growers, producers and suppliers who make shopping at Tesco truly local.”
Michael Stewart of Doherty & Gray said, “This really is fantastic – we are thrilled to have been able to deliver an own-brand range for Tesco fresh meat counters. We are a small family business working with a great group of hard-working and trusted local pork and beef farmers and doing what we’ve been doing for more than 60 years. This is an extremely important and exciting piece of business for us. To receive recognition as an Outstanding Supplier to Tesco is staggering – we are genuinely chuffed.”
Monthly award winners receive a Bridgestone-style plaque, free publicity in local press, advertising support, and shelf-edge signage in all Tesco stores which stock their product.
This is a further extension of the Tesco Taste Northern Ireland campaign, aimed at educating customers and connecting them with the people and places behind their favourite Northern Ireland food & drink.
